Hello!
My name is Alyssa Toy. This is my sixth year teaching in the district and my second year teaching First Grade at South Buffalo. I spent my first 4 years teaching Special Education at Buffalo Elementary.
I graduated in May 2015 from Slippery Rock University with a dual certification in Early Childhood and Special Education.

Handwriting Curriculum (Zaner Bloser)
Our handwriting curriculum is based on Zaner-Bloser Handwriting.
Students will have a workbook to use at school to practice.
Sometimes practice sheets will be sent home to complete for additional practice and to show our development
Homework Assignments
Take Home books will accompany each story. Reading them each night will help your child to become a fluent reader.
Vocabulary and Spelling lists will be sent home with the weekly newsletter on Friday for the following week. Practice reading, spelling, and using the words for a few minutes each night.
All other homework is used to reinforce the skills that were taught in school and will be stamped with a homework stamp.

Labeled Math Homework will be sent home on most nights. This is done to keep the parents informed as to what we are doing in our Math lessons. It also provides extra practice.
Reading Curriculum
Journeys(Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
Kindergarten skill review for the first two weeks.
Weekly Spelling Lists will begin with unit one and will be sent home weekly.
Leveled Readers will be used with each story. They will stay at school throughout the week so we can read them daily in Guided Reading Groups.
Four take home books will accompany each story. These are paper books that should be read at home each night. Please return them.
Poetry/Fluency Folder: Each month students will be given a poem, fluency passages, and Dolch Sight Words which will be practiced daily in school. These will be kept in a folder in the student’s desk.
Daily practice will help in the building of fluent first grade readers
